Since time immemorial, India is known for its Gurukul system of education. Guru Shishya Parampara is embellished in our Purans. Gurus were revered as God. Parents had absolute faith in leaving their wards with Gurus for education.Complete devotion was also seen in the students. Gurus teachings were considered as paramount. No one had even dared to challenge the sanctity of whatever the Guru had said.
Time has changed and so has the Gurukuls. Education system has seen a complete transformation. Gurukuls have been replaced with Schools and Colleges. Teachers have replaced Gurus and devoted disciples have given way to students.
Education has a changed meaning in the present day context. Earlier education was a way of imparting life lessons so that the child is groomed to take up the challenges of life in a holistic and purposeful manner.But now it has become a means of earning ones livelihood. The higher is the degree in education the higher is the pay package. Everyone appears to be a part of this never ending rat race where morality has no place. Value system has touched rock bottom and this is the main reason of an upsurge in evils that plagues our society.
Is our education system to be blamed? Or Is it the widening gap between the teacher and the taught? Or Is it the commercialization of education? Or Is it because of indifferent Parent support system? These are few mind boggling questions which has no straight forward answer. We being a part of this education system needs to understand the very purpose of education. This is actually an essence of education.
We need to lay more emphasis on character building rather than building money minting robots. In order to achieve we need to revive our age old Gurukul system, where the teacher and the taught had a deep understanding and there was no outside influence. But the most pertinent question is how to do that?
Devotion in the teacher and the taught is a must to bridge this gulf of mistrust. I think if this happens then a day is not far behind that our Indian system of education will find a top place in the whole world. It is rightly said that little drops of water makes the mighty ocean. This step definitely will go a long way in bringing the desired change. Everyone in the education system needs to consider themselves as an instrument of change to bring this revolution.
